Your fingers are flying across the keyboard, shooting off emails, memos, proposals, summaries and updates. Those impressive typing skills serve you well.
But what happens when all that typing results in aching wrists? We talked to orthopaedic surgeon William Seitz, Jr., MD, about what causes wrist or hand pain — and the way to stop it.

Check your setup: Arrange your monitor, mouse and keyboard for your height and body size.
Sit straight: confirm you’re sitting comfortably at your desk and not hunching or leaning forward.
Arm yourself: Position your wrists and forearms so they’re nearly straight (not tilted up or down) as you type.
Move it: arise to stretch and move regularly.
Go up and down: If possible, switch between sitting and standing as you’re employed.
Use good posture: Don’t just specialise in your arms. Practice good posture from head to toe to stop pain in your wrists (and everywhere else).

Help for wrist pain
If you’ve got occasional achiness in your wrists after an extended day of typing, it’s probably nothing to stress about, says Dr. Seitz — especially if it goes away once you stretch or resolves within some days.
But if it persists (or keeps coming within the same spot), it’s time to determine a doctor to search out out what’s happening. Treatments vary, but often, simple remedies like wrist braces or the guidance of a licensed hand therapist can help.
